HUNTING TIPS & TACTICS

Of all of the different waterfowl species the Ruddy duck may actually be one of the hardest ducks to decoy. Decoy manufactures do not yet make a Ruddy duck decoy and even if they did it would not be very productive.

The reason being is that these ducks are normally nocturnal flyers unless flushed off the water. It is not uncommon for a Ruddy duck to dive instead of flush when startled or pushed on the water and they do not normally decoy into spreads. They are more of a solitary bird.

The male Ruddy ducks are very beautiful and have a daffy duck like look to them. It is also very hard to attain a fully plumaged male Ruddy duck as they are early migrators south.

Overall this quite little duck is most successfully harvested by spotting and stalking them on the water, which is not very sportsman like to most avid waterfowl hunters. Good luck on your quest for the Ruddy duck UWC Members!
