HUNTING TIPS & TACTICS

Snow Goose hunting across the entire continent continues to be an evolving sport in itself. Back in the early 1980’s die hard Snow Goose hunters were known for using white garbage bags or empty milk containers as decoys and having very good success decoying these incredible birds. In fact they were once known as the “stupidest” waterfowl species on the planet- they said you could decoy them with anything white.

How the times have changed… With the expansive agricultural fields across the country and the refuge systems in place along the entire Central flyway, the population of Snow Geese has literally exploded. The average age of an adult bird is now said to be around 16+ years old. Can you imagine how many decoy spreads each adult goose has seen, being hunted from early September to the end of April EVERY YEAR!

Thus Snow Goose Hunting must evolve as well, and have a short memory. When the conditions are right you can’t keep the Snow Geese out of your decoy spread, but when they’re not, I don’t care what kind of spread you are running, they are impossible to decoy. But just when you are ready to throw in the towel, just give it another 24 hours and the next day rolls around and they are decoying like mad again. What’s the deal? Great question let us know when you figure that out…

So here are some important tips that may help make your next Snow goose hunt a success:

1st – the better the decoy spread the better the chances, however there is a minimum. A serious spread must consist of at least 200 – 500 decoys in order to even play the game, even in Canada…

2nd – you better be covered up, NO EXCEPTIONS! And having a solid electronic sound system is also a must, but is not as important on high wind days.

3rd – what about all of the gadget decoys, do they work? The answer is- Sometimes. The best answer to that question is to be the first to try out the latest gadget, in our opinion. As soon as the latest trick becomes mainstream it’s over, for the most part. The high success comes in by using the latest gadget before the wary white birds have seen it over and over again. No not all gadgets work but the ones that work best are the first ones used in the field. And yes this is an expensive game that not everyone wants too or can afford to play.

However this is also one of the least expensive guided hunts to book. In fact if you look hard enough you can find a reputable outfitter that will offer a high quality hunt over 1,500+ of the best decoys on the market, with the latest gadget decoys for under $200 per day.

And the best part is, at the end of the day whether you had a stellar or a terrible day, you get to walk out of the spread and into your nice warm truck in less than 5 minutes, without having to pick up 1,500 decoys! That’s our kind of hunt!
