HUNTING TIPS & TACTICS

Being a member of the puddle duck/dabbling duck classification, it is well known that the American Wigeon is commonly found in shallow marshy areas. When targeting the American Wigeon exclusively, scouting for specific marshes that hold the American Wigeon year after year can be a great asset and time well spent.

Prior to the last 10 years, only one or two decoy companies even made a American Wigeon decoy and they were marginal at best. These days there are custom American Wigeon decoys available from numerous decoy companies in many unique body positions. Now it’s easy and cost effective to have 2 dozen American Wigeon decoys in many different positions thus giving the active waterfowl hunter an opportunity to put out a decent spread of decoys to target the American Wigeon.

Expert waterfowl hunting outfitter Jeff Colwell of Front Range Guide Service actually guides for this species and has several American Wigeon ponds that hold big numbers year after year. Jeff stated that he has good success using coot decoys along with his American Widgeon decoys. He also mentioned adding in a few diver decoys like Redheads/Canvasback as they are known for stealing food from them is a good idea.

For duck hunters who are more flexible and hunt multiple species of waterfowl during the same hunt, adding in 6 – 12 American Wigeon decoys to your spread can give you the opportunity to bring in a flock of these amazing little critters while targeting other, more numerous dabbling ducks such as Mallards, Teal and Gadwalls. And don’t be surprised if you see a flock of American Wigeons bombard your field spread, with the help of a spinning duck decoy or two.

If you’re looking to target the American Wigeon species, or are just looking to maximize the opportunity to decoy in a flock if they happen to fly by, decoy manufactures these days have made it easy and readily available to make your spread more realistic and versatile by adding a few more American Wigeon decoys to your arsenal at minimal cost.
